ZP comienza a rezar

El PSOE no está seguro de ganar” [ .. ] “La política se ha vuelto algo muy envenenado” [ .. ] “Zapatero reza…”

[ .. ]

Financial Times, 15 feb. 08. Zapatero struggles as electorate’s mood sours. By Leslie Crawford.

Spain’s ruling Socialist party can no longer be confident of winning a general election in three weeks time, as an economic slowdown swiftly erodes its lead. [ .. ]

[ .. ] The election on March 9 is already shaping up to be one of the most closely fought and ideologically divisive contests of the post-Franco era. [ .. ]

A common lament in the run up to the general election is that politics has become too poisonous.

Economist, 14 feb. 08.

[ .. ] Each side accuses the other of buying votes. Each offers the same defence, claiming that they are trying to boost the economy as Spain’s property bubble bursts, global markets get nervous and unemployment jumps. Both accusations and defences have some validity. [ .. ]

Some voters may conclude that, whoever wins on March 9th, they cannot lose.

Yet not all will gain. It is hard to restore fiscal prudence after a fit of indulgence. And unemployment is now a big worry, as construction firms and estate agencies fall over themselves to lay off staff. [ .. ]

Mr Zapatero, who has a narrow lead of some three points in most opinion polls, is also praying—for no more bad economic news before March 9th. Otherwise he too may be out of a job. [Rivals in profligacy].
