Spain’s high-growth economy is heading for a hard landing, according to manufacturing and services surveys that show a sharp drop in activity. [ .. ] But the sudden collapse of building activity has created a huge vacuum that is sucking in other sectors of the economy. [ .. ] “The [Spanish] data suggest economic growth has collapsed in the first quarter of 2008,” said Dominic Bryant, of BNP Paribas. [ .. ] “In economies with a relative size, this type of drop [in services] is usually associated with some sort of systemic event – geopolitical or financial – that brings the normal functioning of the economy to a temporary halt,” Javier Pérez de Azpillaga of Goldman Sachs wrote in a research note. International banks are scrambling to sell their holdings of Spanish mortgage debt at a steep discount, fearing that the country may be sliding into the worst economic downturn in its modern history. [ .. ] David Owen, Europe economists at Drsedner Kleinwort, said Spain was waking up to the reality that there will be no quick-fix. “They are no longer arguing about whether there will be a recessoin, but about how deep it will be,” he said. “Spain is no longer able to set monteary policy for its own needs.
