[ .. ] Jean-Claude Trichet, president of the European Central Bank, won the hearts of financial markets last year [ .. ] Mr Trichet’s reputation is helping Europe’s image. [ .. ] The way he conveys authority and steady-handedness – and the frequency with which he makes speeches – suggests he could also make a good political leader. He is a natural highbrow television chat show guest. The son and grandson of Greek and Latin professors, he studied mining engineering at university and can speak enthusiastically on a range of arts and science subjects, as well as economics. True, he lacks popular street credibility – shoot him a question on football and he ducks – but still, if the EU really wanted a president, why not him? [Financial Times, 17/18 agosto 08. Ralph Atkins, Hail the (unelected) president of Europe].
