When José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero came to power in Spain last April, the Socialist prime minister vowed to rid public broadcasting of political bias and create conditions for equal competition between all media groups.
Ten months on Mr Zapatero is facing a barrage of criticism for allegedly favouring Prisa, Spain’s largest media group, with plans to give it a free-to-air television licence, while failing to tackle root-and-branch reform at Radio y Televisión Española, the loss-making state broadcaster.
