Tras la victoria y la alegría -que algo tiene de universal- queda un país / continente empantanado y profundamente dividido, coqueteando con la parálisis institucional. Con una Cámara de representantes republicana y un Senado demócrata, el presidente Obama volverá a enfrentarse a un Congreso dividido al 50 / 50, una realidad cruda, compleja e inmovilista.

Fukuyama resume la crisis / parálisis de los EE.UU. de este modo:
