Donald Trump dio su temible espaldarazo a Mariano Rajoy. Por su parte, los dos periódicos más importantes de los EE. UU. –muy hostiles a Trump- han tomado posición en defensa del orden, la ley y la Constitución de España:

Washington Post, 2 octubre 2017. Catalonia held a referendum. Russia won.

El Washington Post estima que el Govern viola la ley, ha provocado un voto ilegal, ha sido rechazado por la UE, pero está apoyado por Venezuela y los servicios de inteligencia rusos, ya que, a su modo de ver, Moscú percibe el movimiento separatista catalán como una nueva forma de dividir / fragmentar a Occidente:

“The heavy-handed tactics unwisely employed by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy came in response to a reckless and irresponsible drive by Catalan nationalists to create an independent republic in violation of the law and, most likely, the wishes of the majority of the region’s residents.”

El New York Times ha publicado un editorial y un comentario político.

El editorial tiene mucho de “brindis al sol”:

“… There are potential political solutions, probably involving greater autonomy for Catalonia, but so long as Mr. Rajoy and Mr. Puigdemont remain intransigent, these will remain out of reach…”. Chaos in Catalonia.

Las “soluciones políticas potenciales” es una manera de no decir nada, acompañada del “mientras R. & P sigan siendo intransigentes”. Una frase ANULA A LA OTRA. Mi “solución” de ayer me parecía menos hipócrita: elecciones en España y Cataluña: que catalanes / españoles juzguen la crisis con su voto.

El comentario de un columnista del NYT apoya expresamente a Mariano Rajoy:

“I can’t defend the rule of law in the United States — the rule of the law and the Constitution for which President Trump has often shown contempt — and not defend it equally in Spain. [ .. ] Mariano Rajoy, the conservative Spanish prime minister, has made many mistakes…But on a fundamental point, Rajoy was right: the referendum was illegitimate, having been suspended by Spain’s constitutional court. It was anti-constitutional in a nation that has prospered since the end of Franco’s dictatorship in 1975 by replacing a caudillo’s whim with the law and by joining the family of rules-based European democracies…”.
